Junior speak

I haven't recorded a lot of gems that Junior comes up with these days ... but quickly wanted to make note of few so I could read them fondly few months down the line.

Junior has been learning about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington at school, so kids are aware of "President's Day". Junior knows the term "President", but for obvious reasons is not aware of the responsibilities / power associated with Presidents. So on President's day, when we were getting ready to head out to a museum, she promptly walked up to me and asked "When is the President visiting us?". I am too stunned to react ... and guess she understood my confusion and continued "Amma Santa comes on Christmas day and distributes gifts .... when will President come?". I ask her to name some Presidents and she mentions Lincoln and Washington. So I tell her, those Presidents are no more and will not come. And she goes ... Oh, Barrack Obama will visit us. OK !! Mr.President ... are you listening???

**************************

Junior learnt about snails, turtles, snakes, frogs, alligators etc at school beginning of Feb. She barely could hold the pencil straight when she started pre school last year. Writing an alphabet meant an entire page for a single alphabet. But she has come a long way in terms of coloring and drawing pictures. She actually drew those creatures ... and best part, I could actually identify them without having to read the label / title :) So anyways, she was getting ready to school in the morning and came excitedly to me and said, "Amma, we will learn about Dinosaurs today". I was glad she was pronouncing the word Dinosaur correctly ... when she says "Amma, its very easy to draw Dinosaurs. Just draw Turtle body and head and tail of snake... thats it". I was too stunned to react.

Discovery India for Pre-schoolers

Junior's school is celebrating "Small World" week from tomorrow. Parents are invited to explain about their country for pre-schoolers. And I signed up for the same without much planning ... after all I grew up in India and could very well speak about my home country. Boy ... how wrong was I !! Its very tricky coming up with concepts for 3 year olds .... really.

So far, I have come up with Indian flag ... festivals of India ... National Bird / Animal. I am unsure what else would be relevant for 3 year olds from across the globe. (there are Chinese, Taiwanese, French, American, Japanese, German kids in Junior's class) The presentation is supposed to be for 10 mins .. Ideas plsssssssssssss ....

Update:
The presentation went quite well ... thank you all for the wonderful ideas. I prepared slides for Indian flag / map, festivals, vacation spots, food, dances and taught the kids to say "Namaste". I also had a slide which showed personal pics of us as a family celebrating festivals. A true winner with the kids :)

Both girls are in school ...

India trip was very very hectic ... sure it was fun, but we were on the move more than I would have loved. We were constantly driving around ... mostly in 2 wheelers since thats what fancied the kids more than car. I was hesitant to allow BP ride the bike initially ... but had few options since the kids wouldn't budge. We also managed 2 family union trips ... one was really a big one to pull off , comprising of BP's entire family (first circle only) There were about 24 families of which 22 managed to make it. Met lot of folks for the first time. Of course the kids came back rotten pampered.
Although the trip was fun, I had wanted to do some things like meeting my special friends, visit my college lecturers, do nothing and relax on "MY" bed in "MY" house for atleast a couple of days, climb the Chamundi hills ... unfortunately these things didn't happen due to various reasons beyond my control. We also realised that 3 weeks of vacation was very short considering our huge family ... also felt others were influencing too much of our visits / stay.

Anyways .... so we came back almost 3 weeks back. The first week was pretty bad with jet lag hitting us. Kids and me were in bed by 7:30pm and we ate dinner almost a week after we were back.

Once routine kicked in, there were changes in store. Cantaloupe's school began. We went to school a day before school began to check the classroom list. She was little disappointed not to find her friends in her class. She had also hoped to have a certain teacher .. but that was not the case. One of the parents there commented that Cantaloupe's teacher was very strict ... and had little tolerance. Well, Cantaloupe heard that comment and was very hesitant the first few days of school. But she seems fine now ....

And bigger news is Junior started school ... YES... my little baby started pre school from yesterday. I barely slept sunday night ... only imagining how Junior would manage school. But she put all my tensions to rest by walking into her classroom with a big dimpled smile and settled on her chair with play dough and a cookie cutter :) She also went around telling folks at random "My mom will come to pick me up in the evening". Of course mom was there earlier than expected :) To my surprise, she had finished her lunch box as well .. including the fruit. (Idly and mango) I was truly impressed.
My nephew also started school with Junior. The kids are just 5 months apart and have grown up together all this while ... be it grandma taking care of both of them or going to the same home day care. So we didn't want to separate the two and so enrolled them in the same school, requesting the school to place them in the same class. While they agreed to do so while accepting the application, the kids were allocated different classrooms. Our request to accommodate a transfer and have the kids in the same class fell on deaf ears. So as it stands, the little ones go to same school but different classes.

I hope this year turns out to be fun and joyous ride to all three !!

Is being involved in kid's routine uncool ??

This is the impression I am getting when talking to folks (mostly in office) and let me add most of these folks are dads.

When ever my colleagues asked me what my girl's latest mile stone was I'd gladly share the same with them. Being climbing up and using the slides independently at the local park or handling a monkey bar or recognizing the alphabets / numbers or learning new rhymes or showing interest in coloring ... whatever, I'd just share it as a matter of fact. Along the same lines, when asked during our last lunch out, I said, my girl now identifies flags of about 40 countries ... and that she was way ahead of her dad in the quiz to identify the flags.
I thought this was a neat achievement ... Junior has been showing interest in identifying flags lately and I thought as a mother I should encourage her. (she pesters me even now to look up more flags ... I am too lazy to do so).

But I was stunned by the reaction of my colleagues ... they thought I was a pushy mother and I was pressurizing my kids to learn things at a very young age. In fact one of them went to the extent of advising me to leave the kids alone. The other said, my daughter is about 4 now, and she barely knows her alphabets and numbers. She is having fun ... and went to give a Hi-fi to another colleague, as if to imply he was being cool. I asked him what are the things he has taught his daughter and he again insisted he was being cool by not teaching her and leaving it to his wife.

Really ???? Encouraging your kid's interest and being part of their routine is uncool ??? Since when??

Vinova milk and Mandori raaga

We are driving to school with classical music playing in the background. (B Jayashree)

Junior: I want Naat raaga
(said raaga playing in the background)

J: Naata aada mele Mandori barutte
(after Naata, Mandori raaga will come)

Me: yes.. it is Mandaari :)

J: Amma which raaga is this?
Me: Begade
J: Ade nanna room idyalla Melgade (oh ... my room is top floor ... top floor = Melgade)
Me: ROFL .. It is Begade not Melgade
J: Are you sure? (in English)

J (listening to Kande Na Govinda na song) : Oh ide... snaana time (oh this is bath time)
Me : what? (suddenly light bulb flashes ... we say Govinda, end of bath)

*********************************************************************

J: I want Vinova
Me: What??
J: New Vinova
Me: What is that???
Cantaloupe: She means Vanilla milk
Me: ROFL

********************************************************************

Cantaloupe has split her button collection and calls out
C: Sis,.... I need help
J: Rescue Ranger on the way
Me: WHAT???

Hungama Hungama

For what ???

For "Yellow" oranges to be given to her highness and not the regular "Orange" oranges...

ps: Cantaloupe later explained to us stumped parents, that her sister meant lemons :)

Yet another surprise ...

Junior enjoys reading with me ... I often read to her ... I have prepared my own slides of fruits, flowers , colors, alphabets , shapes and the like and she loves to sit with me and read. She identifies 10 countries by their flag ... and thats enough for me to think I have a genius of a child .. anyways I digress.

Yesterday Cantaloupe and I were working on a fuse beads project for a prop she was going to use at school, and BP was loading the dishwasher and Junior was sitting her favorite Dora coloring book and a lone crayon. (we were too lazy... sorry busy to get her the crayon box and she just picked one random crayon you can so easily find in every room of our house)
And all of a sudden Junior announces "Appa I wrote A ... Amma .. akka I have wrote A". Stumped by what we heard, we rush to see what she has written and it is indeed A ... the cutest A very possible :) (whatever that means). BP thinks its mere coincidence that what she was scribbling resembled letter A and asks her to write it again ... and she goes "One line ... Two line ... Three Line ... there A"
I simple couldn't believe what I saw. What followed was a long video recording / photo session followed by a crayon box reward :) She has been busy since last night just coloring ... while akka was proud of her sister initially, once the crayon set was given out to Junior, it wasn't pretty anymore :(

Sisterly love

Cantaloupe busy playing by herself when she is interrupted by Junior. (Junior thinks being part of Cantaloupe's game is her right and the right way to be part of akka's game is to take away all the toys akka has neatly arranged)

Fearing all her toys / books arranged, Cantaloupe yells at Junior "Go away ... I don't want to play with you"

Junior comes running back to me with tears in her eyes ... "Amma akka said go away ... I want to play with akka"

I talk to akka and request her to include Junior in her game.

Next moment " Go away"

"But akka, I love you ... I want to play with you"

enough to melt my darling older daughter's heart and the next moment, both are hugging each other and falling over all the toys and collectively making a mess :)

ps: We rarely talk to Junior in English ... its a different story with akka though. The entire conversation above happened in English and I was pleasantly surprised at how Junior is forming sentences in English already.

This and that ...

Ever since I have read Zen Shorts ... Cantaloupe and I, both are relating every day events to the story.
No prizes for guessing the book she picked in the school library ... Zen Ties !!!!
Stillwater, you have found two loyalists here !!

In other news, nephew turned two ! The little fellow whom I nick named for his long head at birth is already two and plays pranks on me.

Junior hums ... sings to herself these days. And the sequence is set .. Polly put the kettle, Little Jack Horner, .... and finally I love you, you love me. (she is Not a Barney fan)

Cantaloupe started badminton classes ... for now extremely pleased with the patient coach. I know my girl likes playing badminton ... but easily gives up. She wants the easy way out ... tries couple of times and thinks she will master the sport in a week. I think these classes are a good beginning for her to learn patience and perseverance.

Debating about Abacus classes .... talked to her teacher at school. The teacher thinks its a good idea to enroll ... I am hesitant, more so because it is 2 hrs class at a stretch. I do know some of my cousins who have benefitted from these classes. (in India)

Oh yes ... Junior thinks she is a Chess champion !! And what does she do with chess pawns ... identifies all the pawns correctly, places the chess board in the right direction and neatly arranges all the pawns. (I am still confused on this part ... should the black square be to my right or left .. and the Queen ... where does she sit ???) Once she has accomplished this task of arranging all 32 pawns, she promptly packs them back.

Proud Mama

Last evening I read, "Papa, Please get the moon for me" to Junior. As I was about to close the book, Junior pointed to the last page of the book and said "Edu, Sloth book nalli ide" ( * This is present in Sloth book") and what was she referring to .... well to Eric Carle's signature :)

Indeed Eric is the author of Slowly Slowly Slowly said the sloth, her current favourite book.

Proud Mama can't stop grinning :)

A very close encounter with nature ... and more

Past few weekends have been packed .... what with us exploring new territories, it has been exciting and tiring at the same time.

Two weeks back, after lot of discussions, disagreements / agreements we decided to go hiking. Now, this IS a brave decision considering we have 2 toddlers in the family to be entertained and not to forget the just turned 6 year old baby. (oh .. by the way, she has given me strict orders to not address her a "baby". Baby should be replaced by "Sweetie", "Putta" whatever ... but no more baby) Anyways, the place chosen was Uvas Canyon.... about an hour's drive from our house. We decided to pack lunch and had lovely visions of eating out in the open, beside a creek, enjoying the quietness of the place and soaking the lovely views.
We decided to start early .. around 10:00am (what ??? that is not early ??? well ... summer break, saturday morning ... waking up at a decent hour after a late night movie is hard ... and not to forget the hubby's P1 bug that needs attention first thing in the morning) Surprisingly, we got ready of time and drove to the place. The roads leading to the hiking trails were narrow and we finally reached the place and collected the map ... set the toddlers on their strollers and put on sun screen lotion, hats and set out to hike as true professionals. The place was indeed beautiful and quiet .... not many cars were parked. (only 1 more apart from 2 of ours). BP and my dad pushed the strollers ... the path was steep and rough. It was indeed hard to push the strollers (which contained water bottles, food, snacks, juice, swim wear, towels and extra set of clothes) We had hiked a little when, Junior decided to try hiking instead of being tied to the stroller. So I walked along with her short distance while BP and my dad followed us closely behind. My mom and Cantaloupe were walking along with me ... while my sister and BIL were slightly behind us. All of a sudden, Junior decided enough hiking and started back towards her dad (about 20 steps behind) and stopped in between, expecting me come get her. It was indeed steep for a 2 year old to balance and I was right behind her. Just then Cantaloupe came up to me and said as a matter of fact "Amma ... Junior pakka Haavu ide" (Amma, there is a snake beside Junior. Cantaloupe continued hiking after having stated the obvious ... but hearing out those words scared the hell out of me. I looked closely and saw a snake about 2 in of distance from Junior's feet ... just one more step and she would land on the snake. I screamed "Snake" and BP who had caught up with us immediately picked Junior up in a flash second. Had I not mentioned, he might have stepped on the snake too. It was very much alive ... it had perhaps eaten few mins before and had a bulged tummy.
The hike was never the same for me.... I was imagining all sorts of reptiles and could not enjoy much of the hike. We got down in one of the water falls and the kids did have some fun ... but I couldn't think beyond the snake. We spotted the same snake on our hike back too (it had moved further away) and warned fellow hikers about it.
There were picnic tables set up and we had lunch .. hiked some more and decided to drive back. On our way back, we also visited Mount Madonna ... a quiet place with a small temple and lovely views. Got back home in the evening and awesome chai (courtesy BP) and went out for dinner. I hugged and kissed my girls for No particular reason for the next 3 days ....

**************************************************************************

Last weekend, we went to the Circus show in town. We didn't buy the tickets online (thanks UTBT for the tip) and bought them in person. This was my first experience of a circus show ... as was it for the girls and BP. Cantaloupe enjoyed the show for the most part ... but was put off when I refused to buy her Lemonade. (that was about 15 -20 mins before the end of show). So after the show, when my dad asked if she enjoyed the show, she said "Sort of OK" ... to which my dad asked her "Why so?", who had obviously heard her claps and cheers the entire time of the show. She answered "Because mommy did not buy me Lemonade" :)
Junior and my little nephew watched the initial minutes of the show startled by the color and music ... but later, almost the entire time was spent munching on raisins, bread, pop corn, cotton candy, cookies, chips and the likes.
I wouldn't say the show is must see ... but for first timers it was certainly worth the money we spent and an enjoyable experience overall.

Current Books my 2 years old loves

Slowly Slowly Said the Sloth - By Eric Carle (Thanks UTBT !!!)
Way Up in The Arctic - By Jennifer Ward (finding the hidden numbers was instant hit with both the girls)

We read both these books atleast 3 times a day ....

Some positives:
* My baby is aware of new animals (ok ... not just my baby ... me too ... honest confession: I was not aware of Tapir, Peccary, Coati )
* She knows about animals in the Arctic (and I learnt about Lemming)

We have read other books ... but the above 2 require special mention.

Cute moments

Junior waves Hi to our neighbor's 4 years old son (who blushes) and says: Hey Camel !!
(*the little boy's name is Cayden*)

ps: Junior genuinely thought his name was Camel and NO, we have never made fun of his name in our house.

************************************************************

My mom explains to Cantaloupe that "Chowla*" will be held in Dec this year. (being planned for my nephew)
Cantaloupe (*curiously*) : I do not want to attend this event
My mom(*surprised*): Why??
Cantaloupe: I don't want my hair chopped ... you said in Chowla they cut hair cut, I don't want a hair cut.
My mom: ROFL

ps: * an event where the boy's hair is cut for the first time

Junior is fast growing ...

Scene 1:
Place: My sister's house
We knock on the door ... My sister opens the door soon followed by my 21 month old nephew. He gets excited and starting running around the house smiling all the time.
Junior: (*Still standing ourside*): Thats funny ????

(meaning: whats so funny to run around the house ??)

*************************************************************
Scene 2:
Newly potty trained Junior getting ready for her sisters' birthday party. Adults whispering about the rest rooms in the party hall.
Junior: How about pull ups ???

Note: we last used pull ups some 20 days ago ...

*************************************************************
Scene 3:
This morning, I put on a bath robe on her ... it was atleast 2 sizes bigger... but she was too excited and I didn't want to ruin her excitement and I let it be. She goes to show off her robe, to my mom and granda can't handle her giggles and laughs at Junior's dress
Junior: (*Very Firmly*): Thats NOT funny !!!

*************************************************************
ps: Junior has never been trained knowingly in English ... she has picked up English from her sister and all the above lines from her were in English. We encourage Kannada (our mother tongue) in our house :)

Junior Language

What do the following mean? (many in Kannada)

Kankata
ellowe
Thotha
Maniiii
boo
Aalu
Daachi
aapeepe
Dova
Kapaka

Ah well ... that Junior for you and the words called out are
Kannadaka (glasses in kannada)
Yellow
Thota (meaning water)
Mane (house in kannada)
Blue
Haalu (milk)
Drakshi (grapes in Kannada)
Office
Dora
Chikkappa (for "Chacha" in Hindi or Uncle)

Junior's speech has improved by leaps and bounds now .. she speaks in small sentences. Sentences of two - three words and manages to communicate almost everything she needs to. She even sings ... her favourite song being Jo Jo Laali Naa haduve. This was one of the songs my parents sang for me when I was a little girl and when she sings the same I can't stop myself from being flooded with memories of my childhood. She can also sing some Boney M songs ... Daddy cool being her current favourite. Of course she has her own versions of the song such as Mommy cool .... akka cool ..

Just want to put down her baby words before she outgrows them ....

Akka - Tangi relationship

* BIG KAALA TIKA ... DRISHTI POST*

Kids grow fast .... Few developments I'd like to capture for my future reference :)

* Only few days back I remember showing Junior flowers ... birds ... trees trying to explain concept of different colors and now she is a full fledged color enthusiastic. Anything and everything will identified by its color. She can identify and call out Geen, Boooo, ellow, puple, lack, ite, own ... then there are other colors she identifies but cannot call out like Red, Orange, Pink and will fall into the "Tada" category. (in case you didn't follow the colors were green, blue, yellow, purple, black, white and brown)

* She is a number girl :) Anytime she hears a familiar number she will start counting from there. Picture this ... during the thanksgiving week, we were sharing some jokes when someone said "That was a good one" and my little one started counting Two, three, four, five ...
And then the other day my sister said three more days and it will be thanksgiving ... of course Junior started out four, five, six
Its kinda cute. She can count upto fourteen ... why fourteen ... because she refuses to say anything beyond that no matter what we try to do. She has a mind of her own. Once she says fourteen ... she refuses to listen to anything we say and just smiles and says "Clap clap clap". The numbers one to ten were taught by BP and rest four by her akka. BP took about a week to train her and I think it took about 10 mins for akka to get those four numbers ... so you now know now much she follows her akka.

* Akka is God to her .... period. No questions further. No matter what akka does, she follows her like a puppy. Akka does a somersault and Junior is not far behind ... akka tries skipping and the next thing you know Junior is playing with the skipping rope. Heck ... when akka is doing her homework, we give the Doodle slate to Junior and she is busy scribbling something.

* Junior got her 18months shot last week and it was not a pleasant experience. The moment she saw the nurse, she started bawling ... (the nurse is not really kid friendly ,,, I can tell you that ... but how did Junior figure that out just looking at her ... I am not sure) She got 4 shots and all the while she called out akkaaaaaa.... akkkaaaaaa . That was something I had never seen in any kid. I have seen kids calling out their moms and dads ... like ammmmmma ... and appppaaaaa while crying ... akka was something new to me. And when I returned home mentioned about the shots to akka, she jumped right next to Junior and started massaging her thighs ... sibling love at its best I tell you.

* Of course, for everything now, Junior wants Akka for company. Give her break fast and akka has to sit with her on the dining table and eat with her. Give her a lollypop ... she immediately asks one for akka.

I have already mentioned about her wanting akka beside her when she goes to bed. I am just loving this phase. Pray it lasts for many many many more years.

Junior Updates

My darling Junior turns 17 months tomorrow ... yep 17 months already ... and I have barely 7 posts about her developmental updates. Hmm ...
She loves her family .. that is her sister, dad and mom and can express her love in action as well ... she comes around looking for us calling out akka .. appa... amma in the cutest voice and hugs us so warmly and starts patting us on our back. She might even plant a kiss if we are lucky. I hope she continues to express her feeling similarly for many years to come.
Her akka is her ultimate guru .... if akka dances, she begins to jump up and down ... err. ... dance. If akka does a somersault, (palti) so does she. Akka picks a book and a pencil, madam immediately demands she be given the same and it better be the same color akka has.
Just 3 night back, both girls were sleeping in their room when I heard a small wail coming out .... I slowly walked up to their room to see Junior awake. Most days I would have carried her and helped her fall asleep ... that night I didn't. I just paused and observed and what to I see. Junior looks at her sister sleeping next to her and calmly settles beside akka, hugging her. She is all secure and falls asleep. I was at peace at that moment ... I just stood there for almost 5 minutes too much consumed by the love I saw. I will never forget this incident ever ...
Just when I thought I had seen the best of sibling moment, another incident happened. This was when we came back from day care on friday. I had picked up grocery and was unloading the same from car. The kids got down from the car .... Cantaloupe carried her school bag and extended her hand for Junior. The little girl confidently grabbed the extended hand and started walking towards our house. We have about 30 stairs to climb before we reach our house I have carried Junior 90% of the time ... the rest of the times I have supervised her as she has climbed the steps. But that day ... she just confidently held her sister's hand and Cantaloupe patiently helped her sister climb up the stairs. In between while climbing, Junior would turn back and grin, almost challenging me to go ahead of her ... Once she climbed all the steps and reached our main door, I could see the sense of achievement in her eyes.
Junior now recognises some colors .. blue, purple, green, yellow, red ... loves to cuddle beside me while I read for her ... enjoys the music any time / all the time ... (she demands music be turned on by saying "Daddy daddy cool" :D)
Her vocabulary has improved a lot over the past few weeks ... most definitely communicates what she wants ... be it demanding her blanket which she calls "Talkie" (for blankie) .. or Toota (for water)... TeeVee (for TV) ... Nana (Snana or bath) .... Dapeeeeeer (Diaper) .. so on and so forth. For words she identifies but cannot spell out she uses a common sound "Thadaa".

She is the darling of our family currently and I hope she continues to be so.

Two kids - One game

How do you balance out the interest of 2 kids of different ages at home ? Thats becoming such a different challenge for me to handle these days.

Anything I start out with Junior is baby game or boring for Cantaloupe and Junior just has her own rules when I attempt playing anything with her sister. Like the other day, I wanted Cantaloupe to not be left out of family fun and introduced her to Carrom, (this was a popular game with us kids while I grew up ... none of us came close to becoming champions, but nonetheless we had so much fun) So I arranged the carrom pawns on the board and stepped out for about 5 secs to fetch the powder and what do I see when I come back ?? Junior in the middle of the board throwing the pawns in all possible direction and thus ended my grand plans of carrom with Cantaloupe.
Also another day, Cantaloupe wanted to play -pretend doctor / patient with me. So I was the patient and she was my doctor. She had her stethoscope and pretended to check me and prescribed me some pills. She was bought to give me a shot / injection when she found the same in Junior's mouth. Apparently it tasted better than a lollipop to Junior who made such a hue and cry before giving up the syringe.
Board games are out of question ... there is no way the pawns will remain on the board ... triominos, snake and ladder - all gone for a toss.
We manage to play pretend games sometimes ... Cantaloupe is irritated when Junior disrupts her game plans, but I try to convince her that Junior is her assistant in the task and is only helping out. But then why would anyone call the idea of pulling out ones' hair helping when she is pretending to be a hair dresser.
I am running out of ideas on how to handle both kids together ... they manage just fine when they play with each other (well . most of the times ... ok sometimes they manage). So far dancing with music in the background or hide and seek have been working fairly well with both kids ... but then there are only so many spots in the house where one can hide :)

Ideas please ....

How can this be happening?

Junior announces (in fact runs from any corner of the house to find us) and announces "Poo Poo" and then does the act !!
Potty training was never in my mind ... why does this girl remind me of things I am not ready for ?

ps: I thought the first time was a coincidence ... it has happened consistently for the past week ... hmm ... really how can this be happening???
