I had signed up to participate in a drama for a community event in december without reading the script. Big mistake ... the script is out and the drama is not remotely funny when it is supposed to be humorous.
The drama script is written by a friend's husband ... I desperately want to back out now unless the script changes. Can't make a fool of myself being part of this "Master piece" ... oh wait ... may be I won't be making myself a fool because there will be no one paying attention or even better no audience.
Do I risk offending the friend and speak the truth and back out OR should I come up with some stupid reason and back out?

aargh. thats atricky one.
i'd back out, maybe wont have the guts to say the complete truth for risk of offending teh other party though.
Very tricky...
If the friend is a really really good friend, I would risk telling...
But, somehow, backing out, though not teh ideal option, seems to be the safest option?
Gawd! Back out! But make up a white lie :( I'm thinking of backing out of something else too...
Uhh ... what a fix! I wud hv try to make up something which seems like a valid reason and backed out :P
Back out giving a white lie. Dont try telling the guy the script is bad.
I did that once to a friend who was trying to get into movies (actually everyone in our group hinted that) but he remained unruffled, like the rest of us dont know what we are talking about!
EASY!! Share the script on your next post..there are enough people in the blogworld who can help change/tweak (ala 3Idiots) at least your dialogues and make them funny. When its all done scream 'Surprise' at the writer uncle/friend! :)
@Chox / Pixie: As much as I hate to backout ... I think I am left with little choice
@Starry: You too uh? Grrrrr .... you know I had directed a drama last year and when the main lead requested script before she signed up for the drama I had ridiculed her. I thought she was being unreasonable ... afterall it was a community drama ... now I understand and even wish I had that kind of wisdom
@Swaram: Having to take my daughter to a dance practice for the same event seems reasonable enough ... me thinks ??? No??
@TPL: That guy is one of the most serious type of person I have ever come across ... I should have known better when I was told he'd be scripting the drama.
@Guddi: Now there is an idea .. but a lot of folks already have ideas to improvise the script ... only that "Original Script Writer" is not being very receptive.
Wow .. u do hv a ready-made reason ;) Go with it :)
You already have a solution :) How do you get caught up in such interesting situations often? ;)
"only that "Original Script Writer" is not being very receptive."
Thats exactly what I am talking about. This movie-wannabe friend of mine once narrated a script to us and asked how each of us would end the story. Eventually, he disregarded all the endings and stuck to what he wrote. Then why ask us, right? These creative ppl sometimes dont take criticism well.
@TPL: He is no creative head ... I suspect this was his first script ever. Any questions we had during script reading he either ignored and just said .. oh that, that is behind the scene. How are we / audience to know what is behind the scene.
Picture this he said you have to look at the horns grown on his head (imaginative horns) .... how would the audience know I am looking at his horns and not his head :D
hahaha. Now I want you to be in that drama so you can come back and tell us more such funny tales :P
Can I be in the play, please? I have made grown men cry!! I don't like serious people and laugh when they cry. The horns on my head are for real!! :)
@Guddi: We really really need people like you !
Oh god, please come up with some crappy lie and get out of the play. Am sure Guddi can give you enough ideas to get out of the play :)
This might be.. umm.. "passive aggressive" or whatever but I have once or twice just stopped going to badly directed rehearsals and people assumed I gave up or something. Didn't matter really because everyone gave up eventually and the shows did not see the light of the day.
@AJ: Believe it or not .... I was thinking of the same... not going to the rehearsal.
so what happened finally??!! :D
