Cantaloupe gets it from me !

Last weekend we bought some fresh ripe strawberry from the Farmer’s market. The very sight of them was inviting enough for anyone to gobble atleast a dozen.
Cantaloupe being an ardent strawberry sure enough ate her heart’s content.

As I saw her enjoy the strawberries, I was reminded of the time I was expecting Cantaloupe.
Strawberries were my favorite. Any time of the day, I was ready for them … mind you, I just had a mild liking for strawberry before I got pregnant. Somewhere, the pregnancy cravings kicked in and strawberries topped my chart of favorites at that time. I continue to eat them even now … but I am not crazy about them the way I used to be. Cantaloupe reserves that quality!!!

Also I had a distinct aversion to “Mustard seasoning” (tadka). I hated it … I would patiently separate out individual mustard seeds from the dish before I ate it. Thankfully Cantaloupe has not got this repulsion!! (again, I developed this dislike only during pregnancy)

Another friend of mine, when she was expecting said, she had developed a special liking for “Papads” and every meal HAD to go with papads. She also loved idlis and consumed loads and loads of them when she was pregnant. Sure enough … her little boy, is a true Idli fan. Anytime I know they are going to visit us, I make sure, I have soft idlis ready for the little boy!

I’d be interested in hearing any special likes / dislikes you might have developed during the “Special” period and see that your little one has inherited the same.

I ate bus loads of broccoli and for sure Thambi will eat pureed brocs with rice and ghee with glee. Amazing isn't?

@Shobana: Wow ... broccoli !! Its so hard to get kids to eat that ... lucky you!

Something to think about... I ate a lot of veggies and cut down on fruits, not due to cravings, but because I had border line GD. D has no issues eating veggies but makes a big fuss to eat fruits.

I wish I had thought of this...may be I could have actively done something about this! :) But no such correlation here. I was waiting to tell B to go in the middle of the night to get pizza - but sadly no such craving happened. I had the traditional craving like in the movies - for mango and tart stuff - but nothing too strong. Only thing different not during pregnancy but during nursing is that I feel like having something sweet after dinner. Never used to feel that way at other times.

Hmm this is worth pondering about. I did not have any major cravings as such, so I wouldn't know. But I think there might be some correlation, interesting theory !

@ddmom: You know what I mean now!

@Noon / Poppins: I didn't have any middle of the night cravings as well ... sigh ... but I had strong likes and dislikes.

@aryan's mom: I love Kadai dosa myself... especially made with finely chopped onions. Curious if the little one will get the same taste.

@orchid: Welcome ! Baingan ... hmm ... now its BP's fav and Cantaloupes too !

The post made me smile thinking of my pregnancy which seems eons ago now :)

I never had a specific thing on my list. It would be a different thing, a different craving every time. Sometimes it would be "I Only want to have south Indian food" and other days "I only want to eat McDonald's burger" and on other days "I only want to eat roti" or "Only noodles"

Although any smell of food was repulsive to me. So mostly I used to eat the colled down food as the warm freshly cooked food usually emits a lot of aroma. And yes, any tadka was a total no no.

@nm: Curious if little one got your likes / dislikes ...

@pixie: Good luck .. but you know what, if the cravings kick in, its hard to control ;) You need to make a consious effort

Cantaloupe's Amma,
I developed this repulsion for eggs during my first trimester. I uesed to like eggs before pregnancy particularly omlettes. But got nauseated even by the smell during pregnancy. M and N don't eat eggs now and I try to sneak it in because of the health benefits. Nice post :)

No such luck here. If I was aware of this, I would have hogged on vegetables...sigh...it's too late now. KT hates veggies :(

@mnamma: I got nostalgic as I saw cantaloupe ear those strawberries ... hence the post. Going by the response, there definitely seems to be some connection between pregnancy cravings and kids preferences.

@Collection of stars: Alas, if only I knew pregnancy cravings could be controlled !! I am sure KT will get better with veggies ...

@Preethi: I knew it... I was not the only one to have my daughter get my eating preferences ... isn't that amazing how we influence our little ones ??

uh oh.
i'm in so much trouble.
i ate truckloads of cheetos.
:)
i'm kidding, but i think you've got something going there, i ate plenty of eggs during my pregnancy, it's all i could stomach in the awful first trimester and my daughter is nuts about eggs. it's cute.
i ate lots of salads towards the end too and she's okay with most veggies.
i've heard the opposite as well though - a friend lived on bananas during her pregnancy and her son won't touch one with a foot-long pole.
